Md. Kaif: Won one World Cup for India, was a member of one WC runner-up team

New Delhi. Former Team India cricketer Mohammad Kaif turned 43 on Friday, December 1. Kaif can undoubtedly be considered as one of the best fielders that Team India has ever produced. Not only with his batting, but also with his fielding, he contributed significantly to the Indian team achieving many memorable victories. It will be Kaif’s misfortune that his batting has not received the credit it deserves due to his fielding prowess. Born in the city of ‘Sangam’ Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Kaif played 13 Tests and 125 ODIs for India. He has scored 624 runs (one century, three fifties) in Tests at an average of 32.84 and two centuries and 17 fifties in ODIs at an average of 32.01.

In ODIs, Kaif played a memorable innings of 87 not out in the 2002 NatWest Trophy final. Due to this innings, the Indian team successfully chased England’s score of 325 runs at the historic ground of Lord’s.

The duo put on a 121-run partnership for the sixth wicket to take the team to victory. India’s memorable ODI win gave the then captain Sourav Ganguly an opportunity to take off his T-shirt at Lord’s and wave it in football star style. Kaif has been a member (captain) of the team that made India the Under-19 World Cup champion. He was also a member of the runner-up team of the Senior World Cup in 2003.

– Kaif has inherited the game of cricket. His father has represented UP and Railway teams in domestic cricket. His brother Saif has also played as an all-rounder for Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh teams.
– Kaif played for India from 2000 to 2006. He made his Test debut for South Africa in March 2000 and played his last Test against the West Indies in June 2006. Similarly, he played his first ODI against England in January 2002 and the last ODI of his career against South Africa in November 2006.
