‘Meta makes kids addicted to likes…’ US states sue

Washington: As many as 33 US states have filed lawsuits against the Meta company and its various social media platforms. States have accused the company of damaging the mental health of children and teenagers by making Likes addictive. States like California, New York, Colorado have filed suit in the Northern District Court of California. It is alleged that the company has deliberately created many such features which lead to kids getting addicted to the likes. Due to which their confidence is decreasing.

Cases have been filed in courts following investigations led by attorney generals of different states. States have alleged that the company is collecting data from children under the age of 13 without parental permission. New York Attorney General Letitia James said, ‘Metta has profited from the suffering of children. In this effort, the company misled the public about the risks. Nine more Attorney Generals are going to file cases in this case, bringing the total number of states that have complained to 41. States said research has linked children’s use of the META social media platform to depression, anxiety, insomnia, interference with studies and daily life, and many other negative outcomes.

Meta has countered the allegations by claiming that its platform is secure. It is disappointing that states have chosen this path instead of working with it. “Meta is harming our children and teenagers, creating addiction to promote corporate profits,” said California Attorney General Rob Bonta. “With today’s lawsuit, we draw a line.”

In May, US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy called on tech companies, parents and caregivers to take “immediate action to protect children” from the harm of social media. Washington DC. US Attorney General Brian Schwalbe did not comment on whether he was considering filing suit against TikTok or Snapchat as well. He said, currently he is focusing on Meta Company.
