A bench of Justice SS Sunder and Justice Sunder Mohan on Friday sentenced Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Sampat Kumar to 15 days in jail. Earlier, Dhoni had filed a defamation case against Zee Media, Kumar and others in the High Court. The former cricketer alleged that he was issuing malicious statements and reports claiming that he was involved in betting and match-fixing in the 2013 IPL.

A division bench of Justices Sundar and Mohan suspended the sentence for 30 days to give Sampat Kumar an opportunity to file an appeal against the sentence.

Dhoni sought that Kumar and the other defendants be restrained from issuing or publishing false statements against him in the case. Notably, Kumar himself investigated the IPL betting scam. The High Court also restrained G, Kumar and others from making defamatory statements against Dhoni.
