NEET UG 2024 Eligibility: The National Medical Commission (NMC) on Wednesday changed the eligibility criteria for the medical entrance exam National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test – Undergraduate (NEET UG). Accordingly, students who have studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology with English as an additional subject after passing Class 12 from a duly recognized board will be eligible to appear for the NEET-UG examination. In a public notice, the NMC said the decision will also apply to students whose applications were rejected earlier. The notice said that biology and biotechnology or any other required subject cannot be completed as an additional subject after passing class 12.
The then Medical Council of India (MCI) made the rules regarding admission and selection to MBBS courses. According to this, candidates were required to complete two years of studies in Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology subjects along with English in Class 11 and 12 from regular schools.
The notice issued on Wednesday said that after the preparation of Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023, the earlier regulations are repealed with various amendments.
It will be conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). Neat Through the UG examination, admissions to courses like MBBS, BDS, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS), Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) are done all over the country.
Currently, there are 1.04 lakh MBBS seats available for admission in medical colleges across the country. It includes 54000 seats of government medical colleges. BDS has more than 27800 seats. 52700 are in AYUSH courses and 603 are in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry.
A record 20.87 lakh students had applied for NEET last year. This number was two lakh more than in 2022. NEET, the entrance exam for admission to medical colleges, carries a total of 720 marks. It has 360 marks of Bio, 180 marks of Physics and 180 marks of Chemistry.
