Data from NASA’s Worldview satellite shows that smog has been linked to a sharp increase in farm fires in northern India. Since October 29, incidents of farm fires have increased rapidly. The state witnessed a 740 per cent increase in farm fire incidents on October 29 with 1,068 incidents – the highest in a single day in the current harvest season.

AQI up to 500 in some areas of Delhi
Air quality index reached 500 in some areas of Delhi on Wednesday morning. For the last six days, Delhi has topped the list of the most polluted cities in the world. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), at 7 am on Wednesday, AQI was recorded at 460 in Punjabi Bagh, 462 in Bawana, 452 in Anand Vihar and 451 in Rohini. AQI reached 999 in Anand Vihar at 10 pm on November 7.
GRAP-4 was implemented in Delhi
Amid rising pollution, Delhi has implemented a Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-4). Meanwhile, diesel trucks and construction activities have been banned in the capital. At the same time, the Kejriwal government has also announced to implement the odd-even formula from November 13 to 20.
According to the Meteorological Department, morning fog may remain in Delhi till November 13. Experts consider vehicles to be the main cause of pollution in Delhi.
SC slams states for curbing pollution
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has asked the governments of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan to immediately discuss with the Center how to prevent farm fires. The Supreme Court has said it cannot allow this to become a political battle. The Supreme Court asserted that suffocating air quality is responsible for “killing people’s health”.
