Australia’s veteran opener David Warner wants to see Marcus Harris in the opening role of the innings after saying goodbye to the longest format of the game. Warner has already said that the ongoing three-Test series against Pakistan will be his last Test series in this format.
According to ‘ESPN Cricinfo’, Warner said on Tuesday, “It is difficult. It obviously depends on the selectors. If my opinion is asked I will name a player who has been in contention for a long time and has been with the team for a long time.
The capped opening batsman said, “I think Harry (Harris) is that guy. He has been traveling with the team for a long time. He also scored a century a few days ago (in a practice match between Victoria XI and Pakistan).
“He missed out on a place in the team on a few occasions but he always claimed it,” Warner said. If the selectors show faith in him, I am sure he will play in his style.” Harris has scored 607 runs at an average of 25.29 in 14 Tests since his debut in 2018. During this time he scored three half-centuries.
Australia scored 187 for three on the rain-affected first day of the second cricket Test against Pakistan thanks to Marnus Labuschagne’s fighting unbeaten 44. Pakistan captain Shan Masood won the toss and elected to bowl first amid overcast conditions at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, but the visitors could not dominate despite fielding four fast bowlers.
Usman Khawaja (42 off 101 balls) and David Warner (38 off 83 balls) added 90 runs for the first wicket amid support from the bowlers, dashing Pakistan’s hopes of an early breakthrough. Warner, playing his final Test series, caught Babar Azam at slip off spinner Agha Salman in the last over.
