Election preparations are in full swing in Pakistan, where general elections are scheduled to be held on February 8. A political party backed by 26/11 Mumbai attack mastermind and terrorist Hafiz Saeed is also contesting this election. The party’s candidates also include Hafiz Saeed’s son and Lashkar-e-Taiba leader Hafiz Talha Saeed. Talha Saeed is considered number 2 in Lashkar-e-Taiba after his father.

Just last year, Talha Saeed was declared a designated terrorist by the Home Ministry under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Also, the notification said that Talha Saeed was actively involved in recruiting, raising funds, planning and carrying out attacks by Lashkar-e-Taiba in India.

India is also trying to designate Talha Saeed as a UN-listed terrorist. The US has supported India in this regard, although China has repeatedly blocked India’s efforts.

Hafiz Talha Saeed came into the limelight in 2019 when an army supporter was killed and seven others injured in a failed attempt to assassinate him. Hafiz Talha was about to address a religious gathering at a refrigerator shop in Lahore when the blast took place. Although he sustained injuries, he survived.

Imran Khan can also contest from this seat

Talha Saeed has filed nomination papers to contest from NA-122 constituency in Lahore. A big name who can contest elections from this seat is former Prime Minister of Pakistan and veteran cricketer Imran Khan. Imran Khan is currently in jail.

Hafiz’s political efforts did not succeed

Hafiz Saeed is currently in jail. His earlier attempts to launch a political career did not meet with much success. In the 2018 elections, Hafiz fielded candidates from 265 seats of his Allah-o-Akbar Tehreek Party, though none of them won. This time also he is contesting with a new party called Pakistan Markazi Muslim League and is contesting on all the seats.
