Condemning the loss of civilian life in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the need for unity and cooperation among the countries of the Global South in the backdrop of growing challenges in West Asia due to the war.

During his speech at the inaugural session of the Second Voice of the Global South Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India’s steadfast stand against violence and terrorism. Terrorism incidents included an attack on Israel by Hamas on 7 October. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of maintaining restraint and prioritizing dialogue to achieve the objective of ending the war.
The Prime Minister said, “It is clear to all of us that new challenges are emerging due to events in the West Asia region… India has condemned the terrorist attack on Israel on October 7… We have also exercised restraint. … We emphasize dialogue and diplomacy… We also strongly condemn the civilian deaths in the war between Israel and Hamas…”
He said, “After speaking with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, we have also sent humanitarian aid to the people of Palestine… This is the time when the countries of the Global South must unite for global interests…”
The Global South is a group of countries located mainly in the southern hemisphere of the Earth, in the continents of Asia, Africa and South America, where economic development varies. Although the characteristics of these countries are not identical, these countries share similar challenges such as poverty, inequality and limited access to resources.
More than 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians, have been killed since the Palestinian organization Hamas launched land-sea-air attacks on Israel last month, on October 7. In response, Israel launched airstrikes on Hamas strongholds in the Gaza Strip, killing more than 11,000 people.
