President Putin meets External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, discusses Ukraine issue, invites PM Modi to visit Russia

Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Russia next year. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Putin at the Russian President’s Palace ‘Kremlin’. “We will be glad to see our friend Prime Minister Modi in Russia,” Putin told Jaishankar.

Conversations on several issues, including the war in Ukraine
Jaishankar, who is on a five-day official visit to Russia, had earlier met his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov. Addressing a joint press conference after his talks with Lavrov, Jaishankar said he is confident that Prime Minister Modi and President Putin will meet at the annual summit next year. At the same time, the meeting discussed many issues, including the war in Ukraine.

Earlier in his opening remarks, Jaishankar said that the two leaders are in constant touch. The summit between the Prime Minister of India and the President of Russia is the highest institutional dialogue mechanism in the strategic partnership between the two sides. So far 21 annual summits have been held alternately between India and Russia. The last summit was held in December 2021 in New Delhi.

‘Trade between India is increasing’
Putin also said that trade between Russia and India is growing, especially in the crude oil and high technology sectors. He said, “Our business is growing at a steady pace for the second year in a row. The growth rate this year is even higher than last year.
