UGC’s Professor of Practice scheme to link education with skills in colleges and universities is gaining popularity in the country. UGC Chairman Professor Jagdish Kumar has said that 11196 experts from 332 higher educational institutions have applied on the launch portal for the Professor of Practice scheme. UGC chairman M Jagdish Kumar said that the commission wants to bring industry and experts to academic institutions by recruiting professors of practice. More than 60 notifications have been issued for their recruitment on the Professor of Practice portal.

According to reports, CEOs and MDs of many companies are also applying for this recruitment. 152 professors have been appointed in 32 higher education institutions under this scheme.

Let us tell you that the National Education Policy 2020 has emphasized on linking higher education with skill-based education. Therefore, UGC seeks to improve the level of higher education through POP by inducting practitioners, policy makers and skill professionals. Professionals and industry experts from various fields will teach as professors.

what are the rules
Persons who have mastered their particular profession with at least 15 years of service or experience will be eligible for ‘Professors of Practice’. These should not be teachers. As per University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines, experts in fields such as engineering, science, media, literature, entrepreneurship, social sciences, fine arts, civil services and armed forces will be eligible for appointment under this category. UGC NET or PhD degree is not required for this. The basis of appointment will be professional experience only.

A POP contract can initially be for up to one year. The maximum period of service of a POP in an organization shall not exceed three years and may be extended to one year in exceptional cases. In no case should the total period of service exceed four years.
