Amid the surge in wheat prices, the Modi government on Thursday reduced the stock limit on wheat traders, wholesalers and large retail chain sellers from 3,000 tonnes to 2,000 tonnes. The move will come into effect with immediate effect.
Announcing the decision, Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said, “In view of the recent increase in prices, we have reviewed the stock limit and from today the stock limit has been reduced to 2,000 tonnes for traders, wholesalers and large retail chain sellers. A full three months ago, on June 12, the government imposed a stock limit of 3,000 tonnes till March 2024 on these wheat traders.
Adequate availability of wheat in the country
In the past one month, wheat prices on NCDEX have increased by four percent to Rs. 2,550 per quintal after the government observed that the stock limit has been reduced. The food secretary said, although there is sufficient availability of wheat in the country, I think there are some elements who are trying to create some artificial shortage.

There will be no shortage of sugar during the festival
Ahead of the festive season, the government said that the government is fully prepared for the festive season. Chopra said that there is no shortage of sugar in the country, there is sufficient stock. A total of 85 lakh tonnes of sugar stock is available for the next 3.5 months. He said that there will be no reduction in sugarcane production.
