Relations between India and Russia are very deep: External Affairs Minister Jaishankar

Moscow: Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday said that the relationship between India and Russia is not limited to diplomacy or economics, but goes much deeper. Jaishankar, who is on a five-day official visit to Russia, made these comments during a conversation with experts on India affairs at St. Petersburg State University. He said, “The relationship between India and Russia is not limited to politics or diplomacy or economics. (On the contrary) it is much deeper.

The External Affairs Minister said that the role of intellectuals and the contribution of scholars in this alliance is very important. Jaishankar said that India and Russia always try to find new contacts and common points and intellectual world can change. “We need to understand each other clearly instead of letting other countries or societies make decisions,” he said.

Jaishankar said, “Today, when you look at India, we are an economy approaching four trillion (four thousand billion) dollars… You can see that our effort is to ensure that we succeed next May. And become a developed country in 25 years.

“A developed country does not mean only a developed economy, but a country that is aware and proud of its traditions, heritage and culture,” he said.

Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday. Relations between India and Russia remained strong despite Russia’s attack on Ukraine. India has yet to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine and has said the crisis should be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue. India’s crude oil imports from Russia have increased significantly, despite growing uneasiness in many Western countries.
