Team India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Thursday backed his captain Rohit Sharma and said that he does not need to be taught how to score a century. Rohit is being criticized for not turning an aggressive start into a big score in the World Cup 2023 final against Australia. However, Ashwin says he did what he had to do for the team. He managed to do the same in the semi-finals as well.
Rohit was in superb form throughout the tournament and his performances at the top helped India get off to a flying start. He scored 597 runs in 11 matches at a brilliant strike rate of 125. The manner in which Rohit was dismissed while trying to play a big shot against Glenn Maxwell in the final is being criticized in some quarters. He played an innings of 47 runs off 31 balls, which laid a strong foundation, but the team could not capitalize on it.
Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, “Everyone is saying later that if he (Rohit) had kept playing he could have scored 100 runs, but it was his willpower that the team was able to put up this kind of performance. Rohit Sharma You don’t need to be taught how to score a century, he has scored many centuries, but it’s the spirit that counts.” The veteran off-spinner also revealed that he was behind Australia’s decision to bowl first in the final last Sunday. Surprised, but also praised Pat Cummins and selector George Bailey for reading the Ahmedabad pitch brilliantly.
The World Cup final broke old TV viewership records, with 300 million people watching the event for the first time in television history.
Australia won the World Cup for the sixth time after defeating India on many fronts in the final. Ashwin said in his YouTube video on Thursday, “Australia played brilliantly in the final. I was surprised to see their strategy. I was personally surprised by Australia’s decision because as per their history, they prefer to win the toss and bat in the final. I was praying to God that Australia would do the same.
