Moscow. The Russian military said on Sunday it had successfully test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile from a new nuclear-capable submarine. The report comes amid rising tensions between Russia and the West over the war in Ukraine. Exacerbating those tensions, President Vladimir Putin signed a bill last week revoking Russia’s ratification of the global nuclear test ban. Also, Moscow said there was a need to establish parity with America.
The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that the strategic missile submarine ‘Imperator Alexander-3’ fired a Bulava missile underwater in Russia’s northern White Sea, which struck a target in the far-eastern region of Kamchatka. The statement did not specify when the test took place. The ‘Imperator Alexander-3’, one of the new Bori class nuclear submarines, can be deployed with 16 Bulava missiles at a time. It could serve as the main naval component of the country’s nuclear forces for decades to come.
A decision will be made regarding inclusion in the Russian Navy’s fleet
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the submarine’s ballistic missile firing is the final test after which a decision will be made on its inclusion in the naval fleet. The Russian Navy currently has three Bori-class submarines in service, the Defense Ministry said. Besides, one submarine has been tested and three others are under construction.
