New Delhi. Sri Lanka gave a huge blow to the Netherlands team who created the biggest upset by defeating South Africa in the ICC ODI World Cup. In a match played on 21 October, the former champions registered their first win of the tournament by defeating the Dutch team. Batting first, the Netherlands scored 262 runs on the back of fifties from Seabrand Engelbrecht and Logan van Beek. Sri Lanka opened the points account by achieving the winning target.
The Sri Lankan team got their first win after three consecutive defeats in the ICC ODI World Cup being played in India. After missing out on an easy win against the Netherlands, the team made a strong comeback. Batting first, the Netherlands bowled out Sri Lanka for 6 for 91, but lower order Seabrand Engelbrecht and Logan van Beek scored fifties to trouble Sri Lanka. Seabrand Engelbrecht scored 70 off 82 balls while Logan Van Beek scored 59 off 75 balls.
Samarawickrama’s innings took the lead in the match
Chasing the target, the Sri Lankan team lost their first three wickets for just 104 runs. From here Sadira Samarawickrama took charge of the team and was supported by Charit Aslanka at the other end. The pair took the score to 181 runs. Aslanka was dismissed for 44 runs off 66 balls but Samarawickrama finished the match with a run innings.

Former world champions Sri Lanka had not managed to win a single match in this World Cup before the match against Netherlands. There was only one team without a win. South Africa, Pakistan and then Australia beat Sri Lanka in the opening matches. The team’s first win was against the Netherlands.
