Standoff at airport in Germany ends after nearly 16 hours, girl hostage arrested

Hamburg police said in its latest update that the hostage situation had ended and that the suspect and her daughter had gotten out of the car. Emergency services arrested the man without encountering any resistance. He said the girl was not harmed.

In Germany, a man held a girl hostage for 16 hours after arriving at Hamburg airport. Air traffic was also restricted under these circumstances. On that, the Hamburg police said that it is not possible to enter the airport at the moment.

A gunman broke through the gate with his vehicle and opened fire inside the premises at Germany’s Hamburg Airport on Saturday. After this, all flights were stopped and all terminal entrances were sealed. The Russian news agency TASS gave this information citing the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

The man broke through the security barrier and reached the aircraft maintenance area

According to a German newspaper, an unidentified man was seen in a car in front of Terminal One. He broke through the security barrier and entered the aircraft maintenance area. After this, a large number of police officers reached the spot.

Hamburg Airport said on its website: “Due to police action on the Hamburg Airport apron, there will be no take-offs and landings on November 4. All affected passengers should contact the airline directly.”

The accused opened fire at the airport

A police spokesman said that at around 2 am today (IST), a gunman entered the security gate of Hamburg Airport and rammed his car. He fired two shots in the air and threw two burning bottles filled with inflammable substance from the car.

Police said there were two people in the car. There was a 35-year-old man and a four-year-old girl. The car was parked under the plane. Police suspected that the reason behind the hostage situation might be a custody battle over the girl. Police said the girl’s mother had earlier told them that the girl’s father was in contact with the girl.

The girl’s mother reported her abduction

A police spokesperson said the car driver’s wife made an emergency call to inform the police about her daughter’s abduction.

According to the German news portal NDR, the girl lived with her mother on stage. A 35-year-old man from Buxtehude “forced away” the woman’s daughter yesterday.

The planes were evacuated from the airport

According to the DW report, Turkish Airlines planes and other airlines were also evacuated from the airport. Authorities evacuated the terminal buildings. More than 60 flights were canceled today due to the standoff, affecting more than 3,000 passengers. Hamburg police said earlier that a large contingent of emergency services was present at the airport.
