An Indian-origin Sikh man and his 11-year-old son have been shot dead in gang violence in Canada
Ottawa:
Canada’s law and order is once again being questioned. An Indian-origin Sikh man and his 11-year-old son have been shot dead amid gang violence in Edmonton. It is being said that Harpreet Singh Uppal (41), a Sikh killed in the violence, was a notorious figure in the organized crime scene in Canada.
Edmonton Police Service Acting Superintendent Colin Derksen told reporters Friday that Uppal and his son were shot and killed in broad daylight outside a gas station Thursday afternoon. A friend of Uppal’s son was also in the car at the time of the shooting, but was not injured in the attack. Dirksen said police do not know if the attackers knew there were children in the car when they opened fire.
“But what we do know is that when the shooter or shooters realized (Uppal’s) son was in the car, they deliberately shot him,” Dirksen was quoted as saying by the Edmonton Journal. He said killing of children was once taboo and gang members avoided crossing the line, but now the situation is changing.
Police have not released the name of Uppal’s son. No one has been arrested in this case yet. According to CBC News, Uppal was charged with possession and smuggling of cocaine. The hearing of this case started from April 2024.
