Actress who came to India after escaping Japanese attack, got her first break at 19, Amitabh Bachchan tells the story

New Delhi: Megastar Amitabh Bachchan not only answers questions through ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, but also narrates the stories of films and film personalities. He narrated an anecdote from the life of Helen, a famous dancer known for her powerful roles in films. He was born in Rangoon, Burma (now known as Myanmar).

Helen’s family came to Dibrugarh in Assam in 1943 to escape the Japanese occupation of Burma. Helen got her big break in 1958 at the age of 19. He then performed on the song ‘Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu’ from the film ‘Howrah Bridge’. Along with legendary actor Shammi Kapoor, she performed many hit dance numbers like ‘Suku Suku’ in ‘Jungle’, ‘Yamma Yamma’ in ‘China Town’ and ‘O Haseena Zulfon Wali’ in ‘Third Floor’.

Amitabh welcomes the roll over contestant Lalit Kumar to the hot seat in the quiz reality show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 15’. According to an IANS report, she was asked the question, ‘Which of these actresses was born in Myanmar and later came to India with her family during the Second World War?’, for Rs 25 lakh. The options given were – Sulochana, Suraiya, Nadira and Helen. The correct answer was Helen.

Lalit was not sure about the answer, so he decided to leave the show and took the price of Rs 12,50,000. Then Amitabh said, ‘Helen and her family came from Myanmar. He had to walk for miles through rivers, mountains and jungles to reach India. He had to do this in 1943 to escape the Japanese occupation of Burma.

Big B continued, ‘She became a popular actress in our film industry. Anyone will be mesmerized watching her dance. Helen has shared the screen with Big B in films like ‘Mohabbatein’, ‘Don’, ‘Sholay’, ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, ‘The Great Gambler’ and ‘Ram Balaram’. He did a special role in the track ‘Mehbooba-Mehebooba’ in the movie ‘Sholay’. Amitabh said, ‘I had the good fortune to work with him in a few films. She is a kind woman. He takes care of everyone.
