Bhai Dooj 2023: Bhaiya Dooj is celebrated as a symbol of mutual love and affection between brother and sister. According to Panchang, Bhaidooj falls on the second tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartak month. This year Bhai Dooj is being celebrated today, November 15, Wednesday. On Bhai Dooj, the first auspicious time is from 6.44 am to 9.24 am and the second auspicious time for Tilak (auspicious muhurt) starts from 10.40 am and lasts till 12 noon. After this, Rahukal will begin. Sisters apply Tilak to their brothers on Bhaiya Dooj day and many sisters also observe fast on this day. It is considered auspicious to listen to the story of Bhaiya Dooj especially for the sisters observing the Bhaiya Dooj fast. The story of Yamaraj and Yamuna is associated with this day, due to which this day is also called Yama Dwitiya.

According to legend, Lord Surya had two children, a son and a daughter, with his wife Sanjaydevi. One was named Yamaraj and the other Yamuna. Unable to bear the rays of the sun, Sanjaydevi’s shadow began to live as a shadow in the North Pole. Yamaraj established his separate city of Yampuri and started punishing the sinners. Seeing this, Yamuna went to the cow world and started living there. But, Yamaraj and Yamuna got separated and could not meet each other for years.

After this, one day Yamaraj, who had gone to Gaulok, suddenly met Yamunaji. The brothers and sisters got emotional seeing each other. Yamuna took Yamaraj to her house, fed him and also applied Tilak. After this, Yamaraj asked Yamuna to ask for a bride and Yamuna promised that every year on the second day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartak, Yamaraj would come to meet Yamuna. This is how Bhaiya Dooj started to be celebrated every year.
