According to news 18, Virat Kohli did not go to London due to any family emergency, rather it was a planned trip which the Indian team management, including the BCCI, was already aware of.

According to the report, a senior BCCI official said, ‘Virat Kohli was not going to play that match (intra-squad match). Team management was aware of their plans and schedules, and this was not something that happened overnight or because of a family emergency. Look at the player we are talking about, that is Virat Kohli. When it comes to these things, their things are organized. His trip to London was already informed and planned.

Virat Kohli trained in South Africa for three days before leaving for London, after which he left the team. However, he has now rejoined the team ahead of the Boxing Day Test starting on December 26. Virat Kohli first arrived in South Africa with the team on December 15. After practicing there for three days, he left for London on December 19.
