Lucknow As part of its ongoing efforts to promote the use of solar energy in UP, the Yogi government plans to convert the Bundelkhand Expressway into the state’s first solar expressway. The government wants to set up a solar power plant on the Bundelkhand Expressway under the PPP model, with a target of generating 550 MW of solar power.

For this initiative, the government has identified 1700 hectares of land on the Bundelkhand Expressway. Many big companies have shown interest to participate in this project. Once completed, the project has the potential to illuminate one lakh households connected to the expressway every day. The project has an expected life of 25 years, with a payback period of 10 to 12 years.
The Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) is currently busy shaping the project. Apart from this, the RFP for selecting the developer for the project is also being finalised.
The completion of the expressway project is expected to meet energy requirements and serve as a foundation for future e-mobility and development along the expressway. The project will generate significant amounts of green energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to mitigating climate change.
Apart from this, development of Bundelkhand Expressway as Solar Expressway will significantly benefit UPEDA. Also from lease rent to UPEIDA Rs. 4 crore revenue is likely. The sale of generated energy generates an annual revenue of Rs. 50 crore profit can be made. Installation of solar plants on Bundelkhand, Purvanchal, Agra-Lucknow and Gorakhpur expressways can bring a profit of Rs 6 crore annually to UPEIDA in terms of energy consumption.
