The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has slapped a fine of Rs 5 lakh on Khan Study Group (KSG) for misleading advertisements and unfair trade practices. UPSC Civil Services Exam coaching organization KSG claimed that all the five toppers of UPSC Civil Services Exam Year 2022, Ishita Kishore (Rank-1), Garima Lohia (Rank-2), Uma Harathi N (Rank-3), Smriti Mishra (Rank 4) and Mayur Hazarika (Rank 5) took coaching from there. It was also said that out of 933 selected candidates, 682 took coaching only from KSG.
In a government statement, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) imposed a fine of Rs five lakh on Khan Study Group (KSG) for misleading advertisements and unfair trade practices. This decision has been taken to protect consumer rights across the country.
The CCPA, headed by Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare and Commissioner Anupam Mishra, has issued orders against Khan Study Group (KSG) for misleading advertisements and unfair trade practices in view of the violation of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. KSG advertised with misleading claims.

“Every year when the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) civil services exam results are declared, various IAS coaching institutes claim successful candidates as their students,” the statement said. Candidates to influence prospective candidates, while not disclosing the courses chosen by such candidates or the fees and courses paid by them.”
Hence, CCPA took automatic cognizance and issued notices to various IAS coaching institutes and Khan Study Group is one of them.
According to a TOI report, the CCPA had served a notice to the coaching institute in August. In response, the organization said that out of the 682 successful candidates featured in the advertisement, 674 participated in the mock interview program which was free. Further investigation revealed that out of 682 candidates only 8 had taken guidance for additional courses and that too in previous years. CCPA said, ‘This fact is not stated in the advertisement. This makes the customer think that the successful candidates belong to this organization and hence they are cheated. The investigation also revealed that the five toppers took only mock interviews from KSG.
