New Delhi:

The Army will phase out its flagship Cheetah and Chetak helicopters in Siachen over the next four-five years. Army Aviation Corps requires 250 such light helicopters for army requirements. Currently, the Army has around 190 Chetak and Cheetah helicopters. The Army will get around 100 light utility helicopters from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited over the next few years.

The Army is also considering leasing helicopters to meet the remaining requirements. Although the Army says that we will try to get only indigenous helicopters, it is unlikely that HAL will be able to supply so many LUH helicopters to the Army in the next 10-12 years.

However, the Army also had some problems with the design of the LUH helicopter, which have been resolved to a large extent. According to the Aviation Corps, the autopilot is currently being fitted to it and if all goes well, delivery to the Army will begin by the end of next year.

Army uses Cheetah and Chetak to transport troops and equipment in inaccessible and difficult areas like Siachen. No other helicopter is as successful at this altitude. It can easily fly at a height of 12 thousand feet. However, it does not have an autopilot. It cannot even fly in all seasons. He is now almost 50 years old. Many times, when these helicopters crash, the question of their removal has arisen, but they cannot be replaced so quickly.

If we talk about the LUH made in the country, its engine and avionics are state-of-the-art. Can fly in all weather conditions. According to the Aviation Corps, LUH is 25 to 30 percent better than Cheetah and Chetak.
