New Delhi:

The Supreme Court on Monday said that “intense competition” among children preparing for competitive exams and “pressure” from their parents are the main reasons behind the rising number of suicides across the country. The court made this observation while hearing a petition, which sought regulation of the fast-growing coaching institutes and cited student suicide statistics. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhati, however, expressed helplessness and said that the judiciary cannot give directions in such circumstances.

Advocate Mohini Priya, who appeared for the petitioner, Mumbai-based doctor Anirudh Narayan Malpani, said in the bench, “These are not simple things. Behind all these incidents there is parental pressure. Parents put more pressure on them than the children. How can the court direct in such a situation? Can?

Justice Khanna said, “Though most of us do not want there to be any coaching institutes, let’s look at the condition of the schools. There is stiff competition and students have no other option but to go to these coaching institutes.

Priya cited the number of student suicides in the country based on 2020 data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

The bench said it was aware of the situation but the court could not give directions and suggested that the petitioners approach the government with their suggestions. Priya requested to withdraw the application to approach the appropriate forum, which the court allowed.

The petition filed by Priya through Malpani said “they want proper guidelines to regulate the operation of the rapidly growing profit hungry private coaching institutes across India which provide coaching for various competitive entrance exams like IIT-JEE (Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance). Exam) and NEET (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test).

The petition said the petitioner was compelled to approach the court because “several students have committed suicide in recent years due to lack of regulation and supervision by the respondents (central and state governments).”
