Eight former Indian Navy personnel sentenced to death for alleged espionage in Qatar have received a major reprieve. The court has stayed the death sentence. India filed an appeal against the death sentence. On October 26, a Qatari court sentenced eight ex-navy officers to death. After the commutation of the death sentence to imprisonment, there is hope that eight Indians will have the option of serving their sentences in India as per the 2015 agreement.

The names of 8 ex-Navy officers sentenced to death in Qatar are – Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Saurabh Vashishth, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugnakar Pakala, Commander Sanjiv Gupta, Commander Amit Nagpal and Sailor Ragesh.

In all these queues, Dahra was working in a private company named Global Technologies and Consultancy. This company provides security services. Khamis Al Ajami, a retired squadron leader of the Oman Air Force, is its chief. He was also arrested along with 8 Indian nationals, but was released in November.

Arrested on 30 August 2022

The State Security Bureau of Qatar’s intelligence agency arrested 8 former Indian Navy officers on 30 August 2022. However, the Indian embassy was informed of his arrest in mid-September. On 30 September, these Indians were allowed to speak to their family members on the telephone for a short time. Consular access was first granted on October 3, a month after his arrest. A second consular access was granted in December.

Bail applications have been rejected several times

Bail applications of eight people have been rejected several times. The Indian government expressed surprise at the Qatari court’s decision. The government said legal avenues were being explored to free them. The Ministry of External Affairs has issued a statement saying that we are awaiting the details of the verdict.

The External Affairs Minister met the families of the jawans

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met the families of these people. He said he could understand their pain and concern. Jaishankar said that the government is making all efforts to ensure the release of eight people.

The External Affairs Minister wrote on social media platform X that he met the families of 8 Indians detained in Qatar. It was emphasized that the government attaches utmost importance to this matter. We fully understand the anxiety and pain of those families.”
