Bengaluru. A big upset was seen in the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Monday. After the presence of veteran batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, Saurashtra lost against Tripura by a huge margin of 148 runs in the Group A match. Batting first, the Tripura team scored 258 runs for 8 wickets. In reply, the Saurashtra team was bundled out for just 110 runs.
After half-centuries from Ganesh Satish (71 off 74 balls), Sudeep Chatterjee (61 runs off 93 balls) and Bikram Kumar Das (59 runs off 76 balls), Tripura scored 258 runs for eight wickets. Tripura scored 258 runs thanks to Saurashtra’s brilliant bowling. The innings ended in just 110 runs in 31.4 overs. Veteran left-armer Jaydev Undkat took five wickets for 35 runs for Saurashtra but to no avail.
Chasing the target, Saurashtra were dealt two big blows early on by fast bowlers Moora Singh and Rana Singh which saw Harwick Desai, Sheldon Jackson and Chirag Jani return to the pavilion for just 13 runs. Pujara (24) and Arpit Vasavada (16) tried to bring the team back into the match with a 37-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Bikram Debnath broke the partnership with an lbw Pujara, after which the team’s innings collapsed like a pack of cards.
In the Group E match, the Bengal team was bowled out for just 84 runs against the deadly bowling of Tamil Nadu fast bowler Sandeep Warrier. Warrior shook Bengal’s top order by giving 23 runs. The team achieved the target by losing five wickets in 19.1 overs. In the second match of the same group, Madhya Pradesh won by 88 runs, dismissing the Punjab team equipped with batsmen like Abhishek Sharma, Prabhasimran Singh and Mandeep Singh for just 89 runs in 19 overs. Kartikeya Sharma and Arshad Khan took three wickets each for the team. Earlier, Akshat Raghuvanshi (62) and Rajat Patidar (31) contributed to Madhya Pradesh scoring 177 runs in 26.5 overs.
