Indigenously built stealth guided missile destroyer ‘INS Imphal’ equipped with surface-to-surface Brahmos missile is being formally inducted into the Indian Navy on Tuesday. INS Imphal will strengthen India’s maritime capabilities amid China’s growing presence in the Indian Ocean.
This is the first warship to be named after a city in the North-East Region. The President approved it in April 2019.

Officials said the warship will be inducted into the armed forces at a ceremony to be held at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai in the presence of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. He said that the naming of the warship after the capital of Manipur underlines the importance of the Northeast region for national security and prosperity. The ship weighs 7,400 tons and has an overall length of 164 meters. It is armed with surface-to-surface missiles and anti-ship missiles and torpedoes.

INS Imphal was handed over to the Indian Navy on October 20 after completing an extensive program of port and sea trials. Subsequently, the ship last month successfully test-fired the extended-range supersonic BrahMos missile, the first such test for any indigenous warship before being inducted into the Navy.
