Opener Fakhar Zaman has termed his unbeaten 126 against New Zealand in the crucial World Cup 2023 match as the best innings of his career. Fakhar’s innings kept Pakistan’s semi-final hopes alive by winning the rain-affected match by 21 runs using the Duckworth-Lewis method (DLS). In reply to New Zealand’s 401 runs for six wickets, Pakistan won the match by scoring 200 runs in 25.3 overs.
This is Fakhar’s fourth century against New Zealand this year. Earlier he scored 101 in Karachi, 117 in Rawalpindi and 180 not out. He called this innings vital to keep Pakistan’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive in the World Cup. “This is one of my best (centuries), I will always remember my 193 against South Africa but this is one of my best,” Fakhar said after receiving the Man of the Match award. During the award ceremony, he said that his team would pray that the rain would continue and the match would not restart.
“When the play stopped we were praying for rain,” he said. We thought it would rain and planned accordingly. We sent a message to the team management after 15 overs that it is drizzling, so tell us how many runs need to be scored in 20 overs.” He hoped that the team would be successful in reaching the semi-finals and final. “I think we found our rhythm,” he said. The good thing about our team and management is that they remain positive. We still believe we can play the semi-finals and even the final.
