Tehran:
In the Islamic Republic of Iran i.e. Iran, people are being executed at an alarming rate. More than 600 people have been sentenced to death in Iran in the last 11 months of this year. This number is the highest in the last 8 years. A rights group gave this information on Friday.

The Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) group said nine people were hanged in a single day this week in a prison outside Tehran, while two were hanged after being found guilty of adultery. In August, a Tehran court sentenced a man and a woman to death for adultery.
The IHR and other groups have accused Iran of using the death penalty as a tool to instill fear in the population. The number of death sentences has increased following several months of women-led protests in the country since September last year.
“The international community must respond to more than 600 executions in 10 months,” said Mahmoud Amiri-Moghadam, IHR director. “Silence is tacit consent to these crimes,” he said. Moghadam said it was still surprising that Iran became the chair of the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Social Forum earlier this week.
The IHR’s 604 number of executions is higher than the 582 recorded in 2022. While in 2015, 972 people were sentenced to death. Sex outside of marriage is illegal in Iran. However, the death penalty for adultery has decreased relatively in recent years.
Meanwhile activists have expressed dismay at the growing number of drug-related executions, which have risen in recent years after previously declining due to reforms to Iran’s criminal code.
