New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday appointed former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa’s son Vijayendra Yeddyurappa as the party’s state unit chief. Vijayendra’s surprise appointment underscores the party leadership’s acknowledgment of veteran Lingayat leader Yeddyurappa’s influence over the people.

MLA Vijayendra, who replaced Nalin Kumar Katil, is considered a skilled organizational leader. With the appointment of Vijayendra (47), who was seen as Yeddyurappa’s political successor, months of speculation came to an end. The BJP faced a crushing defeat at the hands of the Congress in the assembly elections held in May. Since then it was expected that there would be a change in the state leadership of the party.
There was a strong possibility that the BJP would appoint a Lingayat leader as its state unit chief, but ignoring the issue of nepotism, the party has appointed a legislator-turned-leader to the post for the first time. BJP has often targeted other parties on the issue of nepotism. But the appointment underscores Yeddyurappa’s political importance, with his influence continuing even outside of electoral politics. Yeddyurappa’s elder son BY Raghavendra is a member of the Lok Sabha.
