A 45-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly beaten to death by two men in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar. The woman refused to persuade her son to withdraw the molestation case registered against both of them, leaving him angry. An official gave this information. Deputy Superintendent of Police RR Singhal said that Geetaben Maru was beaten with a steel pipe by two accused along with two other accomplices near her house on Sunday evening and she (Gitaben) died on Sunday morning.

He told reporters that the accused asked Maru to persuade his son to withdraw the case registered against him under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act and settle, but he (Maru) refused to do so. Singhal said, “Even before Maru’s death on Sunday night, we took note of his complaint and registered an FIR against Shailesh Koli, his friend Rohal Koli and their two unidentified associates for the attack. We have formed three teams to nab him. .
He said a case has been registered under the IPC for murder, assault and criminal intimidation and relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Prevention Act. Angered by Maru’s death, his family members and a local Dalit leader gathered outside the Sir Takhtsinhji General Hospital and threatened not to take the body until the four accused involved in the attack were arrested.
According to the FIR, the Koli duo and their associates met Maru near his house on Sunday evening and asked him to convince his son Gautam to withdraw the case registered three years ago based on his complaint. According to the police, when Maru rejected their settlement offer, the four started beating him with a steel pipe. The accused also broke the CCTV cameras of a nearby shop and chased the people gathered there.
According to the FIR, the four men threatened Maru’s husband and daughter and forced them to run away. The accused also threatened Maru that they would break his legs if Gautam did not withdraw the earlier case and agree to a settlement. According to the police, before leaving, the accused asked the injured woman to vacate the house and go somewhere else with her family. The family members called an ambulance and took Maru to the hospital where doctors informed the police that the bones of his left arm and left leg were broken in four places and his back and waist were also injured.
