There is a controversy in the state regarding an advertisement released by the Haryana government. An announcement issued by the state government said that 10,000 laborers would be sent to Israel. It is worth mentioning that a continuous war has been going on in Israel for the last 2 months. Israel has a labor crisis amid the war with Hamas. The announcement issued by the government is being heavily criticized by the opposition parties.

However, the Haryana government has defended the move, saying that the aim was to ensure that travel agents could not rip people off by offering them jobs in other countries and that if workers were not comfortable doing so, there would be an option to go to Israel. There is no obligation.

The advertisement published in several newspapers on December 15 has been issued by Haryana Skill Employment Corporation, a public sector company of the state. Haryana has the highest unemployment rate in the country, according to data from the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), and Israel faces a severe shortage of construction workers, with nearly 90,000 work permits being revoked. Israel has revoked the work permits of Palestinian workers because of the war with Hamas.

The unemployment rate in Haryana was 2.9 percent in 2013-14 (when the Congress was in power), which increased to 9 percent in 2021-22. As on July 31, 2023, 5.44 lakh unemployed youths have been registered in the employment offices in the state.

CMIE data released in January this year shows that Haryana has the highest unemployment rate in India at 37.4 percent, while the national unemployment rate is 8.3 percent. However, BJP Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has rejected the CMIE data and pointed to recruitments in the Staff Selection Commission and Haryana Public Service Commission to bolster his claims of employment.

Even after the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s order last month, criticism of the Haryana government has increased. In which the court quashed the 2020 law giving 75% reservation in private jobs to the residents of Haryana.

“Government should give us jobs in the country itself”

While talking to NDTV, a laborer from Kurukshetra said that the government should give them jobs in India. Construction worker Chandan said that Israel is involved in war, why is the government sending us there? The government keeps saying that our country is getting prosperous. The opposition has also targeted the BJP-led government in Haryana. Congress MLA Neeraj Sharma said, “Everyone knows that Israel is a war zone. The state government should provide jobs to our youth in Haryana itself.”
