‘He is the next Mohammed Shami..’ R Ashwin told the story of the bowler whose fortunes changed in 2 balls.

Ashwin has described Mukesh Kumar as a junior Mohammed Shami. He mentioned Mukesh’s qualities one after another. Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, ‘Initially I thought Mohammed Siraj Jr. would be Shami, but now I think he might be Mukesh Kumar. Shami is called ‘Lala’ and as a tribute to actor Mohanlal, who is called Laletan, I call Shami Laletan. Mukesh Kumar has same body, same height and best wrist position. He bowled really well in the West Indies tour.

Ashwin recounted the story of those two balls from Mukesh Kumar after which his fortunes changed. He said, ‘His story is amazing. He is a well behaved boy. When Ganguly took charge of the Cricket Association of Bengal, he organized a talent hunt in which Waqar Younis, VVS Laxman and Muttiah Muralitharan were signed. Mukesh Kumar, who went to Kolkata in search of work, became part of that talent hunt. He was in the toilet when his name was called. After 30 minutes he came back and waited and then said his name was not called.

He continued, ‘Waqar Younis, who was about to leave, asked him to throw some balls. Those two balls changed his life and now he is bowling for India. Waqar said that this boy is talented and will go further. After this he went on to play in the Ranji Trophy where WV Raman was the coach, who encouraged him further.
