India’s great journey at the Olympics is about to begin
India’s contribution to the opening of the Asian Games may have been significant, but progress in terms of performance has been disappointing. This year proved to be a milestone from this point of view. This has happened for the first time when India won a total of 107 medals with 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze. 12 medals were won on the last day of the Games. Last time there were only 70 medals. India sent an official contingent of athletes for the first time to the 1920 Antwerp Olympics. Famous industrialist Dorabji Tata will always be remembered in India’s Olympic journey. The ‘Indian Olympic Association’ formed under his chairmanship selected athletes for the 1920 Olympics. Tata convinced the then Governor of Bombay, George Lloyd, to allow India to play in the Olympics. At the 1948 London Olympics, the Indian hockey team won its fourth consecutive gold medal and its first as an independent nation. It is to be hoped that the Indian athletes will create new records of victories in the upcoming Olympics.
