‘How do I get back to school…my legs back…’: Another harrowing story of humanity’s defeat in the Israel-Gaza war…

Khan Younis, Palestinian: Due to the ongoing war between Israel and Gaza, the condition of the citizens here is bad. There is such an atmosphere of fear that there is a silent silence on the roads. To protect themselves, people are forced to hide in their homes. Here humanity is losing every day in the war and once again the painful story of humanity’s defeat has come to the fore.

There are reports of thousands of children dying in the ongoing war on both sides. Now comes the story of one such girl from Gaza, who is 13 years old and lost her leg in the war. Layan Al-Baz cries in pain as the painkillers she received wear off after her leg is amputated.

Acute shortage of food, water and fuel
“I don’t want a prosthetic leg,” a 13-year-old Palestinian girl told AFP at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. There are acute shortages of food, water and fuel in the impoverished Palestinian enclave, which has been under siege since the war began, and medical aid is in short supply. Supplies are also scarce.

Lamia al-Baz, the victim’s mother, says the lion was wounded in last week’s attack on the al-Karrarah district of Khan Yunis, part of an unprecedented Israeli military operation in response to a bloody attack by Hamas on October 7. About which Israeli officials said. That more people have died than this. According to the Hamas-run Health Ministry, nearly 9,500 people have been killed in Gaza since the war began, including at least 3,900 children.

Lamia says her two daughters, Ikhlas and Khitam, and two grandchildren, including an infant, were killed when Israeli airstrikes hit Ikhlas’ home. The family was there to support Ikhlas, who had just given birth to a baby.

‘His body was dismembered…’
“Their bodies were in pieces,” says Lamia, who had to identify her daughters’ bodies at the mortuary. “I recognized Khaitam by her earrings and Ikhlas by her toes.” Layne, whose face and arms are covered in bruises, asks: “How am I going to get back to school when my friends will walk and I can’t?”

Lamia tries to reassure her: “I’ll be with you. Everything will be fine. You still have a future ahead of you.” The victim said she would get a prosthetic leg and continue her studies, so she could fulfill her dream. To become a doctor. I can complete it. I will be strong for me and my family.”

Israel has carried out heavy airstrikes since the October 7 attack, in which Hamas gunmen attacked from the Gaza Strip. The attack by Hamas killed 1,400 Israelis and took 239 hostages. Here, the death toll in Gaza has surpassed 9,000. Protests are taking place around the world every day to address the plight of more than two million Gazans trapped in the small area due to violence.
