Geneva. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the corona sub-form JN.1 as a ‘species of interest’, but has said it does not pose a high risk to public health. JN.1 was previously classified as the type of interest as part of its parent lineage BA.2.86.
“Based on available evidence, the additional global public health risk posed by JN.1 is currently considered low,” WHO said. According to news agency Reuters, the agency said existing vaccines protect against severe disease and death caused by JN.1 and other circulating types of the Covid-19 virus.
Earlier, the World Health Organization urged member states to continue robust surveillance and sharing of sequences, saying the virus is changing and evolving. The World Health Organization said on Twitter (formerly Twitter), “Dr. Maria van Kerkhove talks about the respiratory disease #COVID19 and the current increase in the JN.1 subvariant. WHO continues to assess the situation. “Follow WHO’s public health advice to keep your family and friends safe this festive season.”
