Hundreds flee Gaza hospital, Israeli army says – no evacuation ordered

Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said in a statement that 120 wounded were still in hospital. Apart from this, there are also premature babies whose number is not yet known. She said she has been in touch with the Red Cross about the children.

Officials said some medical staff have been deployed to take care of people who cannot be taken to hospital.

There are queues of the sick and injured, some of whom are disabled and displaced. There are also doctors and nurses. They all move towards the beach.

The Israeli army has refused to order the evacuation. “The Army has accepted the request of the Director of Shifa Hospital to make it possible for those who were in the hospital and wanted to leave,” the Army said in a statement.

The United Nations estimates that 2,300 patients, staff and displaced Palestinians were taking shelter at al-Shifa hospital before Israeli troops arrived on Wednesday.

Israel has accused Hamas of launching attacks from hideouts under a massive health complex. Israeli soldiers are searching the buildings to collect evidence to prove their claim.

The Islamic movement Hamas is ruling Gaza. It has armored wings. Hamas has consistently denied using hospitals as bases for fighters.

Hamas health officials say dozens of hospital patients have died in northern Gaza after a blackout caused by a fuel shortage caused by fierce fighting.
