Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 will see Gautam Gambhir playing the mentor role of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Gambhir announced his departure from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) today and moments later shared a photo in a KKR jersey and wrote, “I’m back.” Under Gambhir’s captaincy, KKR have become IPL champions twice. Gambhir is among the most successful captains in IPL history. As a player, Gambhir ended his IPL journey with Delhi Capitals, after which he became the mentor of LSG. After the conclusion of ICC World Cup 2023, Indian cricket fans are now eagerly waiting for IPL 2024. Under Gambhir’s captaincy, KKR won the 2012 and 2014 IPL titles.
Gautam Gambhir said in his statement, ‘I am not an emotional person and very few things move me, but this is completely different. This is the place where it all began. Today my throat is full and my heart is on fire, I am not only returning to KKR, but I am returning to the city of Joy. I’m back, I’m hungry, my number is 23, I’m KKR.

Gautam Gambhir has been part of the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup teams as an Indian cricketer. Gambhir was part of the KKR team from 2011 to 2017. During this period, KKR reached the playoffs five times and captured the title twice. KKR co-owner and Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan Said, ‘Gambir has always been a part of the family, our captain is returning home, coming in the avatar of a mentor.’ The head coach of KKR is Chandrakant Pandit. The assistant coaches are Abhishek Nair and James Foster, while Bharat Arun is the team’s bowling coach. In 2021, KKR reached the final and lost to Chennai Super Kings. After this, KKR finished seventh in 2022 and 2023.
While leaving Lucknow Super Giants, Gambhir thanked the coaching staff, players and support staff. Gambhir said that he is hopeful that this franchise team will do wonders in the times to come.
