According to state government officials, more than 31,000 people from Myanmar and Bangladesh have taken refuge in different parts of Mizoram.

Appealing to the people to vote in favor of the MNF, Mizoram Chief Minister Joramthanga on Monday said he was committed to the cause of Mizo nationalism and would continue to support the movement despite the Centre’s directive to send back Mizo migrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh to their country. His government is giving shelter to those people. Addressing a program on the 62nd anniversary of the MNF, he said he had threatened to resign when he was asked to withdraw Mizoram police personnel from the Assam border during the 2021 conflict.

Chief Minister Joramthanga said, “Amid the crisis faced by our brothers and sisters in neighboring states and countries, the youth will continue to advocate Mizo nationalism.” However, my government is protecting these people from Myanmar and Bangladesh. We will continue to protect our brothers and sisters in Myanmar and Bangladesh, ignoring the Centre’s instructions.
According to state government officials, more than 31,000 people from Myanmar and Bangladesh have taken refuge in different parts of Mizoram. He said the Myanmar people are from the Chin province there who fled after a military coup there in February 2021. Many people from the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh came here to seek refuge after the military operation against an ethnic extremist outfit. Mizoram shares a 510 km border with Myanmar and a 318 km border with Bangladesh.
