Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh handshake controversy: The 38th match of Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka World Cup 2023 was played at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The atmosphere was heated throughout the match. In the first innings where Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed to Sri Lankan batsman Angelo Mathews due to ‘time out’ and showed him the way to the pavilion, in the second innings Mathews took his revenge by taking Shakib’s wicket. But the spirit of sportsmanship was ruined when the players of both the teams did not shake hands after the match. Such a sight is rarely seen on the cricket field. No matter how big the controversy is during the match, the players of both the teams shake hands at the end of the game and appreciate each other and maintain the spirit of the game, but this was not seen after the Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka match.

According to reports, the Sri Lankan team went straight to their dugout after facing defeat. Their captain Kusal Mendis refused to shake hands with the team and went to his dugout with the entire team. Both Bangladesh batsmen also walked to their dug outs without shaking hands, although Shakib Al Hasan came later and shook hands with the umpires and some of the Sri Lankan support staff.
Shakib Al Hasan became the third player after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to achieve such a feat in World Cup history.
Talking about the match, after losing the toss, the Sri Lankan team, who came to bat first, gave a target of 280 runs to Bangladesh on the basis of Charis Aslanka’s century. Bangladesh chased down the score in just 41.1 overs with the help of brilliant half-centuries from Nazmul Hussain Shanto (90) and Shakib Al Hasan (82). Both shared 169 runs for the third wicket. The defeat saw Sri Lanka out of the World Cup 2023, while they are now in danger of being eliminated from the race for direct qualification for the Champions Trophy 2025.
