Fast bowler Arshdeep Singh, who laid the foundation for India’s victory with a five-wicket haul in the opening match of the three-match series against South Africa, said he was under pressure after not taking a wicket in the first three matches of his career. ‘Man of the match’ Arshdeep took five wickets for 37 runs on Sunday as South Africa were bowled out for just 116 runs. He took two wickets in his first over. He took four wickets in the first Powerplay.
Arshdeep told broadcasters after the Indian innings, “I was under a bit of pressure because I had never taken a wicket in an ODI before. Happy with five wickets. The pitch was helping the bowlers at the start of the match. Our plan to bowl or leg before was successful. ,
He thanked captain Lokesh Rahul while receiving the ‘Man of the Match’ award. Arshdeep said, “My confidence was a little shaken. Thanks God and team management. It’s a little different from normal plains because I was breathing. I thank KL Rahul bhai because he said you have to take five wickets on the way back. I think it’s about enjoying the moment.”
Asked about bowling with the new ball after playing as the third fast bowler in the T20 series, the Punjab left-armer said, “Personally it feels good, I am enjoying my role. Our team’s main objective is to adapt to any situation. Whether I open the bowling or have to bowl in the first change, I am happy to represent my country. It was very hot here too. I was playing a 50 over match after a year. But it paid off and after taking five wickets I feel quite refreshed.
Captain KL Rahul was happy to finally win as captain on South African soil. Rahul led India in one Test and three ODIs in the 2021-22 series and the team lost all the matches. The skipper said, “Last time as captain I lost three ODIs here. It’s good to get a win here in South Africa today.”
Rahul thought he would use the spinners to attack early but the fast bowlers performed better than expected. “Our plan was to bring the spinners into the game early, but the wicket helped a lot early on and the boys (fast bowlers) bowled really well,” he said.
