India is scheduled to play a 2-Test series against South Africa from December 26, the series will be part of the World Test Championship. Gavaskar said that Rohit Sharma had taken an aggressive approach in the ODI World Cup, but he will have to completely change his approach in the series against South Africa.

Rohit Sharma will play his first competitive match since the World Cup final when he steps out to lead India in the Boxing Day Test at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. The Indian captain seems to have put the disappointment of the World Cup final defeat behind him as he prepares for his first Test assignment as captain in the rainbow nation.

Rohit Sharma was in great form in the World Cup and played the role of an aggressive batsman in the top order. Rohit scored 597 runs at a strike rate of 125, which gave the team a good start in most of the matches, including the semi-finals and final. He played fearless cricket and attacked the opposition bowlers from the start, but Gavaskar feels Rohit will have to change his style against the Red Kookaburras in South Africa.

Gavaskar told Star Sports, ‘The first and biggest challenge will be to bring your mental state to Test match conditions.’

He continued, ‘He was batting in the ODI format, where he decided that he would play an aggressive role and try to score as much as possible in the first 10 overs. We saw this in the World Cup. This was his vision for the World Cup. But for Test cricket he has to completely change his approach as he has to think in terms of batting all day. If he bats all day, obviously with the range of shots he has, he can score 150-plus runs, India can score 300-plus or 350-plus.’
