Jailed Imran Khan to contest from three seats in Pakistan, PTI announced

New Delhi:

Elections in Pakistan: Preparations for the Pakistan General Elections have now begun. Imprisoned former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan will contest from at least three constituencies in the next general elections. His party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) made the announcement on Wednesday. Imran Khan was convicted by a lower court in Islamabad on August 5 in the Toshakha corruption case filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

This decision meant that he was disqualified from contesting elections for five years. A few days later, the Islamabad High Court suspended Imran Khan’s three-year sentence, but he remains in jail in another case. “Imran Khan wants to say that he will contest from at least three constituencies in Pakistan,” lawyer Ali Zafar told the media outside Adiala Jail.

‘We hope the decision will come soon’

According to a Dawn newspaper report, Zafar said that the Islamabad High Court may soon give its verdict on Khan’s plea challenging the conviction in the Toshakha case. He said, ‘We hope that the decision will be announced as soon as the election program is announced.’ Zafar said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party workers have been instructed to fill their nomination papers.

‘Tickets will be given to jailed workers’

“As far as PTI candidates are concerned, our jailed workers, who have sacrificed for the party in these difficult times, will be given 100 per cent tickets on priority basis,” he said. Zafar said, ‘The rest of the candidates have also been finalized and their names will be announced soon.’ PTI Chairperson Gauhar Khan said that the party wants to hold elections on February 8 at any cost.
