Afghanistan has experienced four earthquakes in 15 days.
Thousands of people were killed earlier in earthquakes of magnitude 6 or higher.
Kabul: Afghanistan has been experiencing continuous earthquake tremors since last Sunday. In the same sequence, earthquake tremors were felt in some areas early on Thursday morning. The magnitude of this earthquake is said to be 4.3 on the Richter scale. According to the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake struck at around 1:10 am and was at a depth of 150 kilometers. No information about damage or casualties has been received yet. It is to be noted that this is the fourth consecutive earthquake in Afghanistan and comes just a week after a major earthquake in Herat province, in which more than 4,000 people lost their lives.
Earlier on October 15, an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale occurred in Afghanistan. Earlier on October 13, an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred in Afghanistan. Earlier on October 11, another earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale hit the country. Last week, an earthquake in Afghanistan’s Herat province killed more than 4,000 people and destroyed thousands of residential homes, Khama Press quoted the Taliban-led ministry as saying.
A series of devastating earthquakes have struck western Afghanistan over the past two weeks, killing thousands and leaving thousands homeless. Aid workers on the ground say the Taliban are unprepared to deal with such a disaster. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the earthquake has collectively killed more than 1,480 people and affected 27,150 people in six districts of Herat. The Taliban’s Disaster Management Ministry put the higher figure at more than 4,000 dead.
Know why earthquakes occur?
The Earth’s upper surface is made up of seven tectonic plates. Wherever these plates collide with each other, there is a risk of earthquakes. Earthquakes occur when these plates try to push into each other’s area. When these plates collide with each other, they rub. When they climb over each other or move away from them, the ground begins to shake.
