The Board of Control for Cricket in India i.e. BCCI has confirmed who is going to conduct the IPL 2024 auction. So far foreign auctioneers used to bid for players in the IPL, but this time an Indian is going to do it. More importantly, she is a woman. The BCCI has confirmed that there will be a new auctioneer for the December 19 event in Dubai, which is Mallika Sagar.
“The independent professional auctioneer, Mallika Sagar, will conduct the auction and be the sole arbitrator for all aspects of the auction,” the BCCI informed the franchises, reports Cricbuzz. Sagar made the first two auctions of the Women’s Premier League. It seems that by appointing Mallika Sagar, the BCCI has done away with foreign auctioneers.
The last foreign auctioneer in the IPL was Hugh Adams. Before him, Richard Medley managed the auction for the first 10 years of the IPL. In the 2022 season, Hugh Adams became unconscious. After that, the BCCI officials soon called an Indian professional auctioneer, who was a resident of Bengaluru, where the auction was going on. In no time, Charu Sharma took the hammer.
BCCI will now shower money on uncapped players as well, thus encouraging them to play international matches.
The IPL 2024 auction is going to be held outside India for the first time in Dubai, but this time the good news is that an Indian woman is going to be the auctioneer. It will be interesting to see and now maybe it will be BCCI’s tradition to have IPL auctions from Indian only. The BCCI seems happy with the way Mallika Sagar has auctioned the WPL twice.
