American surgeons successfully transplanted a pig kidney into a brain dead patient (Pig Kidney into Human). The experiment ended after 61 days. American surgeons announced Thursday that they have performed the longest kidney transplant ever.
According to an AFP report, scientists believe that such experiments will promote organ transplants from animals to humans. The surgery was performed at the New York University Langone Transplant Institute. This was the fifth xenotransplant performed by Montgomery, with the world’s first pig kidney being transplanted into a human in September 2021. The donor pigs came from a herd bred by Revivicor, a Virginia-based biotech company. These pigs are bred, not cloned, which means the process can be scaled up more easily. In January 2022, surgeons at the University of Maryland Medical School performed the world’s first pig kidney-to-human transplant on a living patient. However, the man died two months later.
