National Farmers Day 2023: National Farmers Day is being celebrated in India today. 23rd December is dedicated to farmers in our country. In India the farmer is called the breadwinner and the son of the soil. In fact, today is also the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, the messiah of farmers, hence the day is celebrated as Farmers’ Day in India. During his short tenure, Chaudhary Charan Singh ran many programs for the welfare of farmers. He made many laws and policies for the empowerment of farmers. Chaudhary Charan Singh was born on 23 December 1902. In the year 2001, it was decided to celebrate Farmers’ Day on 23 December every year in honor of Chaudhary Charan Singh. India is called a country of farmers and after independence they have played a very important role in the development of the country.

Today is a day to express gratitude to the farmers who provide food to the country. The purpose of celebrating this day as Farmers Day is to draw everyone’s attention to issues like upliftment of farmers, their important contribution to economic development and their problems. The day serves to educate people about various issues related to farmers. Various programs and seminars are organized on this day on topics like agriculture sector and farmers development. Farmers across the country are encouraged.

Chaudhary Charan Singh, the 5th PM of the country was the Prime Minister from July 1979 to January 1980. He always worked for the welfare of farmers in his life. During his tenure as PM, he took many important steps in the interest of farmers. Being a supporter of rural and agricultural development, he made constant efforts to place agriculture at the center of planning in India.

He was instrumental in drafting the Debt Relief Bill 1939 to provide relief to farmers from moneylenders. He introduced the Agricultural Produce Market Bill in the 1949 Assembly. He became the Agriculture Minister in 1952. Zamindari system was abolished in 1953. He was instrumental in bringing in the Land Holding Act, 1960, which aimed to reduce land holding limits and make them equal across the state. Kisan Trust was established on 23 December 1978.
