“Pass bill in winter session”: Maratha reservation activists remind Eknath Shinde of deadline

Manoj Jarang reminded the government of the December 24 deadline.

Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarang on Tuesday urged the state government to pass the bill in the upcoming winter session of the Maharashtra Assembly instead of convening a special session to grant reservation to the Marathas. Addressing a rally in Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s hometown of Thane, Jarang reminded the government of the December 24 deadline it has set for granting reservations to the Maratha community.

Jarange said that if this demand is not met by then, then the government will not be able to handle the agitation. Jarang, who has been agitating for reservation for the Maratha community under Other Backward Classes (OBC) in government jobs and educational institutions, said the government had no option but to give reservation to his community.

He said, “Maharashtra government may pass the bill in the next session of the assembly starting from December 7.” Instead of calling a special session, give reservation to the Marathas in the next session based on the latest data.” He said the formula of the 2001 Reservation Act should be adopted to give reservation to those whose records are not available. Jarange said that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is capable of taking a decision in this regard.

“If the reservation is not given by December 24, we will decide the future strategy,” he warned. From December 25, the movement will take such a form that the government will not be able to handle it.” Addressing the people at the city’s Ram Ganesh Gadkari Rangayatan Auditorium, he alleged that the state government does not want to give reservation. Marathas want to divide the society on the basis of caste. Jarange said that the Maratha community has won the quota battle by 85 percent and only the last part is left.

Without naming Maharashtra minister and OBC leader Chhagan Bhujbal, Jarang criticized him and said he would have to suffer the consequences later. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Bhujbal has been at the forefront of opposing Jaranga’s demand for reservation from the OBC quota. Jarang said he was physically weakened by his rapid demand quota.

“But don’t go by my physical condition,” he said. I can face and cope with any situation.” He asserted that he would fight till his last breath.
