PM Modi will participate in the World Climate Action Summit known as COP28 during the UN’s ‘Conference of Parties’ on climate on Friday. Many world leaders are to attend the Climate Action Summit to discuss ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and effectively tackle climate change.
The World Climate Action Summit is the high-level segment of COP 28. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has left for Dubai to attend the COP28 World Climate Action Summit,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi posted on social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter). It is an opportunity to discuss the critical issue of climate change with global leaders and showcase India’s progress in achieving climate goals and further plans on climate action.
The Prime Minister is also scheduled to participate in three other high-level events. COP28 is being held from November 30 to December 12 under the chairmanship of the United Arab Emirates. The prime minister said in his statement that COP28 will provide an opportunity to review progress made under the Paris Agreement and pave the way for future steps on climate action.
Modi said, “At the Voice of Global South Summit hosted by India, the Global South emphasized the need for climate action based on principles of equity and climate justice, but also called for greater focus on setting responsibilities and adaptation.”
“It is important that developing countries’ efforts are supported by adequate climate finance and technology transfer,” he said. “To achieve sustainable development, they must have equal carbon and room for growth.”
The Prime Minister said that when it comes to climate action, India stands firm on its word. “Our achievements in various fields like renewable energy, energy efficiency, afforestation, energy conservation, mission life are proof of our people’s commitment to mother earth,” he said.
The Prime Minister said he is keen to participate in special programs including climate finance and green credit initiatives. “In keeping with its principles of civilization, India has always emphasized climate action, even as we pursue social and economic development,” Modi said.
