New Delhi. World Cup 2023 made history on Monday when a cricketer was called out for the first time in 146 years of international cricket. The incident took place between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Angelo Mathews of Sri Lanka has become the first cricketer to be ‘timed out’ in international cricket. The umpire took this decision on the appeal of Bangladesh team captain Shakib Al Hasan. Let’s find out what the ICC Rules say.
In the time out rule, when one batsman is out, the time for the other batsman to reach the pitch is fixed. However, Shakib’s appeal against Mathews is considered against the spirit of the game. Indeed, Angelo Mathews reached the crease to bat within the allotted time i.e. 2 minutes. But he took time to tackle the ball as his helmet strap broke. So, instead of facing the ball, he asked for another helmet from the extra player.
Angelo’s mistake can certainly be considered that he did not take permission for this from the umpires present on the field and the captain of the opposing team. When Mathews had more than two minutes to face the ball, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a time-out, which the umpire accepted. Thus, Mathews became the first batsman in the world to be timed out in international cricket. The special thing is that this happened in a prestigious tournament like the World Cup.
What is the time out rule under which Mathews was declared out?
It is true that the time out rule prescribes the time for the other batsman to reach the pitch from the pavilion when one batsman is out. Under this rule, if a batsman fails to enter the field within 2 minutes, the opposing team can call for a time-out. Let us tell you that to prevent the batsmen from wasting unnecessary time, the rule of time out was introduced. In Marylebone Cricket. Cricket Club (MCC) had implemented it but before Mathews it had never been implemented in international cricket. In first-class cricket, some batsmen are definitely declared out under this rule.
